Elbridge Colby, a former U.S. deputy assistant secretary of defense for strategy and force development, said that the situation over Taiwan is becoming increasingly dangerous and that Washington needs to be careful of the messages it sends.

“China is nearing the ability to pull off an attack against the island. In this situation, what we need to focus on is rapidly and sharply increasing our defensive strength. Symbolism is not necessary at this stage,” Colby said.
