Taiwan Talks speaks to Elbridge Colby, the principal and co-founder of the Marathon Initiative, a think tank focused on strategies to equip the U.S. for great power competition.
Colby argues for why the U.S. should prioritize Taiwan over Ukraine, saying one obstacle is Taiwan’s own support for Ukraine. He also expresses concerns about U.S. military readiness. Colby was deputy assistant secretary of defense under Donald Trump from 2017 to 2018, where he took the lead in crafting the administration’s 2018 National Defense Strategy, focusing on China as America’s greatest threat.
Colby’s most recent book is “The Strategy of Denial: American Defense in an Age of Great Power Conflict.” The book discusses how the U.S. can prepare to win a war with China that it cannot afford to lose—by deterring that war from happening in the first place.
