Europeans are keen to understand the strategic debate in America about where US foreign policy is likely to head in the future. Elbridge Colby, former US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy and Force Development, discusses what US foreign policy should seek to achieve and what it should focus on. Colby lays out his view as to why the United States must adopt a more realistic, geopolitical approach, one that requires it to husband its military strength and geopolitical capital for Asia, which he contends is now the world’s decisive theatre. He also explains why he believes this approach is likely to carry the day in Washington, and what this means for Europe.
